I’m very saddened at this. I read all of those Lloyd Alexander Prydain books in fifth grade, and really loved them–The Book of Three, The Black Cauldron, through The High King. So wonderful, and intriguingly based on the Welsh myths, many from The Mabinogion.
Thanks for posting this, Ned.
I read the first few Lloyd Alexander books when I was in grade school (I can still remember the place on the shelf that they lived at the McPherson Public Library). They didn’t make much of an impression on me then, but I checked them out again and am re-reading the whole series. I have to say, I loved The Book of Three. There’s a lot of wry humor and subtext that I never picked up on as a kid. Still, there’s something inherently innocent and brimmingly hopeful that flows in his writing style. It’s funny, but I think I was finally ready to read the books as an adult in many ways. I’d recommend going back to them for anyone.
