Ned is Right…

devotchka[1]  akronfamily_loveissimple_cover[1]

…this new Devotchka album is fantastic, amongst many of Ned’s rightnesses.  Here’s three tracks I enjoyed in the time I’ve had to listen.

01 Devotchka | The Clockwise Witness
02 Devotchka | Transliterator
03 Devotchka | New World

On with the Ned theme.  Here’s another artist I heard this week and it totally sounded like an artist Ned would enjoy the most of all of us.  I enjoy it quite a bit too, but Ned can surpass us and all of our enthusiasms….

04 Akron/Family | Ed Is A Portal
05 Akron/Family | Lake Song/New Ceremonial Music For Moms
06 Akron/Family | There’s So Many Colors

Remerge Music Thursday

m_emerge

Good afternoon, gents (and ladies).  Hope all is going well for everyone and that Spring is finally arriving. Maybe Summer for Texas?  Work has been really busy for me in the month of March, and I anticipate it continuing through May.  I think about you all often….

Here’s a few tunes that have accompanied me during the long hours the past week.  As I was listening I thought about jumping back into Music Thursday and sharing these with everyone.

Next stop, Devotkcha.  Which I haven’t grabbed yet — thanks for the heads-up, Ned!

01 Alberta Cross | Old Man Chicago
02 Basia Bulat | Before I Knew (Live on Radio K)
03 Fleet Foxes | Blue Ridge Mountains
04 Fujiya & Miyagi | Ankle Injuries
05 The Long Blondes | Nostalgia
06 Mitchell London | Mammal Reenactment
07 Nick Drake | Pink Moon
08 Sam Cooke | Bring It On Home To Me
09 Silent Years | Sharks
10 Sun Kil Moon | Ocean Breathes Salty
11 Vampire Weekend | Oxford Comma

U2-3D

If you haven’t yet seen U2-3D, I highly recommend getting to your closest IMAX theater to take it in. It gives a whole new experience to “Vertigo.” There are some amazing shots, and the 3D quality of it is such that you feel you could reach out and take Bono’s glasses right off his face. It also gives you some of the little details of what goes on up on stage–Larry Mullen’s orange Fanta, for example. The set list is very good, and while it can’t quite capture actually being at the concert, it’s the closest thing available. Even just some of the shots over the crowd are remarkable, and the whole film gives you the virtual experience of what it must be like to be walking out on those catwalks in front of thousands of people. I think the film is in limited release now, but supposed to be wider in the next few weeks. I’m not sure it will be coming to the Hutchinson Cosmosphere, however…

Music of 2007

Since I live the self proclaimed “Live Music Capital of the World” it is only right that my musical tastes have been largely influenced by what I’ve seen in concert. I’ve included YouTube links if you want to see concert footage of what I saw. It’s not my video but there’s always some fan with a video phone these days.

One of the best albums and concerts of the year was Explosions in the Sky, “All of the Sudden I Miss Everyone.” This was the first rock concert (or post rock) that I’ve been to where I actually wanted it to be louder – just to see what would happen. Would my brain explode? Would me liver liquefy? Perhaps I wanted it louder because there are no distracting lyrics just music. Explosions in the Sky is music that builds you up – like getting a hug from the Iron Giant.

Seeing Bjork was amazing of course and she had a great new album this year too. As always, thrilling to the core.

M. I. A. was the discovery of the year for me. She is the complete artist: music, set design and costume design. I’ve always been a sucker for artists who do everything themselves. Somehow she is able to take on the hip hop megalomaniac persona but also make you feel like stands for something besides herself if not through her lyrics then through the whole of her artistry.

My guilty pleasure of the year is Interpol. There new album “Our Love to Admire” doesn’t really cover any new ground but I’ve enjoyed nonetheless. They clearly stand for nothing but they’re just so damn cool. Impossibly cool. You really have to see it to believe it.

Another great find was LCD Soundsystem and their album “Sound of Silver.” From the bravado of “North American Scum” to the more introspective “All My Friends” they are the sort of band you get stuck in you head for days and you don’t mind a bit.

That’s all for now. I’ll get to the rest of my year of media after I get the rest of this crown molding up….

Holidays and End of Year 2007

Happy holidays to all! Be safe, merry, and joyous, and accept good intentions for the New Year and for seeing you all in 2008.

Jen and I will be at her parents’ home for a couple of days over Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, then will be enjoying some restful days here in Minneapolis. We have a good few inches of snow on the ground, and it’s expected to snow tomorrow an inch or two. So no need for dreaming of a white Christmas in these parts.

OUT STEALING HORSES by Per Petterson is #33 on this week’s New York Times Bestsellers list. Amazing for such an introspective, literary work of translation. Funnily enough the book is just ahead of WAR AND PEACE. So take that, Tolstoy!

Any thoughts on the past year? Predictions for the new one? Anyone care to share some of their favorite books, albums, gallery exhibits, songs, movies, etc. of 2007?

Here’s to what’s ahead…

M. I. A.

More on globalism and pop music:

Liz and I went to the Hogg Auditorium here at UT last night to see M. I. A. As I mentioned a few weeks ago, we saw M. I. A. at Austin City Limits festival as well but we didn’t get to see the entire set. I so glad we went back to see her even if we were some of the oldest people in the room. Let me know what you think. I’ll post some tracks if anyone is interested.

This my not be jazz or classical but it’s a helluva lot better than Britney Spears.

While we worked

Painting for Clara Today’s music post is a collection of some of the songs I listened to while we were finishing up projects around the house for Clara’s arrival.  I’m not the most agreeable when it comes to house projects, so I needed something soothing and relaxing.  I listened to a bunch of classical (and movie soundtrack) mixes we had around and thought I’d share my highlights from the bunch with you.  Just in case you need it someday….

01 | Sarabande
02 | Canzonetta Sull’aria
03 | La Valse D’amelie
04 | Midnight Cowboy
05 | Balcony Scene
06 | Nimrod
07 | O Mio Babbino Caro
08 | As Far As Florence Rupert Bear
09 | Intermezzo

In Rainbows

Inb-Rainbows If you haven’t all by now downloaded Radiohead’s new album, In Rainbows, I highly recommend you do so. You can find it on Radiohead’s web site and download it for as much or as little money as you think it’s worth. Admittedly I gave all of two British pounds, which comes to about $5. It’s worth far more than that.

Jerod may even be playing with Radiohead by now, so listen for his distinctive wailing synthesizers on continual loop.

I also highly recommend a newish album by a band called Okkerville River. Very good, tuney stuff.

Jen and I went to see Wilco last week here in Minneapolis, and they put on a really great show. As mellow as their latest album is, the live show was completely loud. Jen’s and my first real date was going to Wilco at the Walker Sculpture Garden, so it was nice to go home again. The opening act was an interesting multi-instrumentalist named Andrew Bird who builds songs live on stage by playing various instruments and looping them over each other. He also whistles a lot, and he’s a damn impressive whistler. Very entertaining and interesting show.

The peak of the fall is already past its heights up here. Jen and I will be raking up damp leaves a lot of the weekend, and trying to find whatever glory can be found in that and scooping out raingutters.
