I have never read a Harry Potter book. There’s part of me that really wants to, but for some reason I’m so mired in the thought that I’ll be thinking all the time that it’s not as good as C.S. Lewis, not as good as Tolkien, not as good as Lloyd Alexander, or Madeleine L’Engle, and so on.
Do you recommend reading the books? Is it worth trying to read the previous six before the seventh (and final, correct?) comes out? When does the seventh come out? 07-07-07?
Jeff, I’ve read them all, and while I think you should have reasonable expectations about the books…they’re some of the best books I’ve read. I got Steph to read them — she was instantly hooked and plowed through them in a couple of weeks.
J.K. has a really playful way of coming up with description and names of things. She really uses the English language beautifully and I think her plots are intricate and wonderful, and they leave enough mystery to keep me thinking.

Anyway, my 2 cents…but I’m a fan.
