A lot of good music has come out of Africa, and especially Senegal. I have an old Youssou N’Dour album, but the more popular he became, the more western he became, doing collaborations with Wyclef Jean, etc.
I suppose that is inevitable. Baaba Maal is an interesting case in that he kind of took a full circle path from traditional music to pop star and back to traditional. N’Dour has done a lot to promote and produce music stars though, like Cheikh Lo’.
