Two for 2008

Crystal-Skull Iron-Man

It seems like there’s been a sad chain of obituaries on the blog lately.  I’m a little hesitant in the midst of those to post something so frivolous, but it’s an exciting frivolous.  At least, I can’t help but get a little giddy about these two news items today.

  1. BRING ON THE FRIVOLITY!
I must admit, when I heard about a new Indiana Jones film, I was a bit skeptical. But the cast is amazing – Cate Blanchett, Jim Broadbent, and John Hurt, as well as Karen Allen returning. I couldn’t have hoped for a better cast. I just hope the story is up to speed with the performers. I’ll check out Iron Man, but I’m not holding my breath. My youthful prejudices are obvious, and I wear them proudly.

  2. I’m with Ned on all this. I am a bit skeptical of INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL, mostly because that title seems so convoluted and perhaps hokey, compared to the first Indiana Jones titles. And I did think INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE was such a fitting end to the series, that I’m concerned about opening it back up and ruining it (see: Star Wars Episodes I, II, and III).

But I agree with Ned that the cast, particularly with Karen Allen back as Marion Ravenwood, is pretty exciting. I am sad that Denholm Elliot passed away and won’t be able to reprise his role as Marcus Brody.

As you can tell, even with my skepticism, I am sure to see the new INDIANA JONES on opening weekend. I still think RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK is one of the very best films of its kind, and is probably a film for the ages.

As for IRON MAN, I am completely skeptical, so will wait to hear word on that one before plunking down my $8.

Thanks for sharing this exciting news, Toby!

  3. Jen and I went to see SUPERBAD last night, speaking of frivolity and its enjoyment. There was a preview for THE DARK KNIGHT, the new Batman movie, also slated for 2008. It is the same team that did BATMAN BEGINS, so it ought to be good.

I do highly recommend SUPERBAD and KNOCKED UP–two comedies that might be of interest to some in this group. Both are very much about young men needing to leave off from their friendships with men in order to mature into some semblance of adulthood. Maybe there’s a point there. Or maybe we all need to get back together in the same place for us all to finally reach adulthood….
