I Miss Music Thursday

Alright, I admit it. I was the one to complain about an inundation of music, but I think I can fairly say I’m ready for another hit. Music Thursday was a nice constant, even if it felt a bit excessive at times. I put a track by a band named Beirut on a cd for J.E. a while back. They have a new one out that I’ve been enjoying called The Flying Club Cup. Maybe a track or two from that would be nice to post. It is, though, a mood album so it might be nice for some of you to hear the whole thing. It has some great instrumentation, though people tend to love or hate his voice. Anyway, Toby, when you feel fully appreciated again… feel free to do the honors. Thanks.

  1. Very droll Shotts.

Ned, Shotts, are you guys buried in Fall semester too? I can barely breathe down here in Texas. Just got my promotion this week. Now I’m the Super with all the Super tasks and trials.

  2. I am with you. I am completely snowed under (to use a term from Thomas the tank engine). I keep thinking things will get easier, but the more hyper-efficient and organized I become, the more work I seem to be handed (maybe because I am the naive idiot who can’t say “no”). I agree with J.E. that Shotts’ comment was droll, but I enjoy envisoining the silent smirk with which I imagine it was posted.

So the academics have it rough, but what excuse does Peters have for giving us the “silent” treatment? Tomorrow, to top it all off, I’m flying to McPee for Gertrude Shaffer’s 90th birthday and coming back Sunday. Sara already left with the kids. I had to take Agnes to the vet on my bike, which worked on the way home…

  3. Congratulations on your promotion, Super J.E. That’s great, but yes, more responsibilities with it. I hope it’s going well, though it seems like you’re in the middle of the transition into your new role. I hope things will equalize.

The fall schedule has taken over. It has been very busy. I have really enjoyed teaching my class at Macalester so far, but have only had two class sessions, so I’m still figuring it all out. What I am amazed by is that I am also a faculty advisor for a senior’s creative writing Independent Project this semester, and also a reader for a senior’s Honor’s Project–both of these without any additional pay. So I understand Ned’s comment about being the idiot who can’t say no, but for me, I’m just trying to get the department to think I’m worthwhile to consider for future classes, so I also feel the pressure to take on these extra roles. It doesn’t seem right that they take advantage of visiting instructors in this way by asking them to do more than what they’re paid little for. But it irks me that the full-time faculty won’t take them on, when that should be their job, and when they’re paid well to give students the experience that they’re paying a lot of money for. So that’s my major gripe, but I do enjoy the students I’m working with, so it’s a pleasure, despite. Right now, it looks quite unlikely that I’ll be teaching next semester, so that makes it all the more strange. But, we do what we can.

I agree about Peters. Haven’t heard from him on the blog in over a month, it seems like. And he’s not even part of an academic community this fall, so I’m not sure what his excuses are.

Have a good weekend in McP, Ned. Who is Gertrude Shaffer?

Here’s to fall, officially starting this weekend.

  4. Gertrude Shaffer is Sara’s maternal grandmother.

  5. By the way, I’ve had some tracks that I uploaded quite some time ago in anticipation of doing a music post. It should be up soon! My absence will be your reward!
